One of the ways in which we do this is through our annual grant cycle. Each year, proposals are accepted by the Research, Conservation and Grants Committee chair until the end of March and are reviewed by the committee and voted on by the board of directors at the annual board meeting. Grants typically range from $500-$2,500 and are usually for single-year projects. Grantees are required to write an article for the<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 15px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">\u00a0Cycad Newsletter<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 15px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">, as well as a final report summarizing the primary results of the study and detailing how TCS funds were used during the course of the study. The TCS grant guidelines were updated in April 2007, and the revised version is available in PDF format by clicking the link below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cycad.org\/documents\/TCS-Grant-Guidelines.pdf\">TCS Grant Guidelines<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In 2007, the TCS Grant Program got into full swing with a donation of $6,679 from one of our members. This single donation allowed TCS to fund three important cycad research\/conservation grants. Then, in 2008, the same member donated $4,000 and several of the society&#8217;s directors contributed an additional $2,600 &#8212; which then allowed three more grants to be awarded.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Previous Grants<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><strong>2025<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>TCS Awarded $2,500 to Dr. Joshua Englehardt (Centro de Estudios Arqueol\u00f3gicos, El Colegio de Michoac\u00e1n, La Piedad, Michoac\u00e1n, M\u00e9xico) and Dr. Michael Carrasco (College of Fine Arts,\u00a0 Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida) for the project titled &#8220;Documenting and Preserving Cycads and Cycad Culture on Amami \u014cshima, Japan in Response to Critical Existential Threats.&#8221; The project addresses a critical biological threat to Cycas revoluta (Cycad Aulacaspis Scale) and documents an<br \/>underexplored facet of cycad biocultural heritage.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><strong>2024<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>TCS Awarded $2,150 to Dr. Laura Ya\u00f1ez Espinosa (Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n de Zonas Des\u00e9rticas, Autonomous University of San Luis Potos\u00ed, San Luis Potos\u00ed, M\u00e9xico) for the project titled &#8220;Fill the gap: Morphological and Demographic Characterization of Dioon edule Populations in the States of Puebla, Hidalgo, and Northern Veracruz, M\u00e9xico.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><strong>2023<\/strong><br \/><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>TCS provided a grant of $2,395.46 to Dino Tuberquia (Universidad CES, Medellin Colombia) for an outreach documentary titled &#8220;Zamia: uncovering pollination interactions in the wild. The project investigates the species <em>Zamia incognita<\/em>, a species\u00a0 threatened by deforestation and mining in the Magdalena Medio region of Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>TCS provided a grant of $925 to Adriel Michel Sierra <span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">(Laval University, Quebec, Canada)<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span> for the project titled &#8220;Leaf Endophyte Microbiota and Secondary Metabolites in Two Zamia Species of Panama&#8221; .<\/p>\n<p><b>2021<\/b><\/p>\n<p>TCS provided a grant of\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">$2010 in April 2021 to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">Catherine L\u00e9ger-Beaulieu\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">(Laval University, Quebec, Canada)<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">\u00a0to support research aiming to assess\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-size: 15px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">the impact of increasing temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations on cycad biology, cycad-cyanobacteria symbiosis, and cycad neurotoxic compounds concentration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2018<\/b><\/p>\n<p>TCS provided $5,000 in May 2018 to support the 11th Conference on Cycad Biology (Cycad 2018) which took place in August of 2018. TCS was acknowledged in the conference program (see below) as well as in the introductory remarks.<\/p>\n<p>A grant of $1250 was provided to Phillip Bell\u2010Doyon (Laval University, Quebec, Canada) in June 2018 in support of research on symbiotic relationships between <em>Zamia pseudoparasitica<\/em> and cyanobacteria and fungi hosted in its coralloid roots. Phillip provided an excellent article for TCN about his experience doing research with the only obligate epiphytic cycad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A grant of $1250 was awarded to Flamingo Gardens in support of their &#8216;Cycads of the World Demonstration Garden&#8217; in December 2018. The funds were used to purchase cycads for the garden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017<\/strong><br \/><strong><br \/><\/strong><br \/>Grant of $1000 in in support of Colombian cycad research and conservation disbursed to Cristina Lopez\u2010Gallego in November of 2017. These funds were obtained from the sale of seeds donated by Greg Holzman who requested the proceeds be used to support Colombian cycad research. The funds were utilized in June 2018 to support Cristina\u2019s travel in the Pacific lowlands of Colombia to study a new species and a hybridization zone between <i>Zamia chigua<\/i> and<i> Zamia amplifolia<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This fieldwork resulted in the publication of the new species <i>Zamia paucifoliolata<\/i>, available as an open access article here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.11646\/phytotaxa.385.2.4\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.11646\/phytotaxa.385.2.4<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>TCS is proud to have contributed $5,000 to CYCAD 2015, which was the 10th international conference on cycads organized and sponsored by the IUCN\/SSC Cycad Specialist Group.
