Cycad Day 2013

The Cycad Society (TCS) has only one board meeting each year, and it is always scheduled in a different part of the country (or occasionally a different country). This year's board meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 4, at the Wallace Desert Garden in Scottsdale, AZ. Associated with each board meeting, TCS also hosts a special "Cycad Day" event on the Saturday following the board meeting. Cycad Day 2013 is scheduled for Saturday, October 5, also at Wallace Desert Garden.

Wallace Gardens sits on 12 acres of spectacular desert, abundant in arid land plants from around the globe. The garden has many native saguaros and other giant cacti along with hundreds of trees, shrubs and other perennials. Numerous agaves and yuccas surround the perimeter. The garden also features a collection of rare & unusual cacti, succulents and is highlighted by a 6,000 SF cactus pavilion.

Open to TCS members and non-members alike, this year's event will have a little bit of everything, for both the serious collector as well as the beginning hobbyist. The program will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. There will be 4 or 5 lectures followed by a southwestern barbeque beef luncheon, followed by a plant auction. Tours of the garden will be offered at the conclusion of the program.

The total cost of admission for the event is $15.00. All proceeds will benefit the 501(c)(3) non-profit, "The Cycad Society".

If you wish to learn more about Wallace Gardens or get directions, you may visit their website at www.walacegardens.org. If you have any particular questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact Nick at argyfam@cox.net.

Please try to let Nick know in advance if you are planning to attend, so that we can have a better idea of the number of attendees, to ensure there is ample food/beverage. Payment for this event can be made at the door.

As the event draws near, there will be an update on exact lectures and guest speakers, along with any other new information as well.

Membership, Auction & Raffle

Each year, the Cycad Day event represents an important opportunity for TCS to increase membership and to raise money for worthy cycad research and conservation grants. But to have a great auction requires great items to be donated to benefit the society. This year the auction will include rare and one-of-a-kind cycad plants, seeds, books, artwork, and color back issues of the Cycad Newsletter. But we need your donations for a successful auction. Contact Nick Argyros at argyfam@msn.com for information on donating anything for the auction.
